EDUCATION SYSTEM IN THE UNITED STATES:

The American educational system comprises 12 grades of study over 12 calendar years of primary and secondary education before graduating and becoming eligible for college admission. After pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, there are five years in primary school (normally known as elementary school). After completing five grades, the student will enter junior high or middle school and then high school to get the high school diploma.

Students completing high school may apply to attend an undergraduate school. This may be a community college (one that offers two-year degrees, usually to prepare students to transfer to state universities), liberal arts college (one that concentrates on undergraduate education), or part of a larger research university.Education in the United States is mainly provided by the public sector, with control and funding coming from three levels: federal, state, and local.

Bachelor level education in USA normally starts after the completion of 12 years of primary and secondary education. Hence, education beyond class XII is also known as post-secondary education, in USA. Bachelor programs are of four years duration, and are offered by different types of colleges. Liberal Arts colleges offer a general education in Arts and Sciences that develop general knowledge and reasoning ability. Most of these types of colleges are privately owned and have limited number of programs.

Community colleges are those that offer Associate Degrees of two years duration. On completion of such two-year Associate degrees, students join either upper-division colleges or universities to complete the balance two years for obtaining the Bachelor degree. Most community colleges are publicly owned ones and offer technical programs that prepare students for entry into job market, with Certificate and Diploma programs of six months to one year.

ADMISSION PROCEDURE:

As an international student one needs to send the admission application to universities as per the admission guidelines of the particular university. The requirements include academic performance records, English language proficiency, valid scores of SAT / GMAT / GRE as per the program. All the universities have their set deadlines to accept the international applications for particular intake. The student has to follow the general and specific guidelines to obtain the I-20 from respected universities.

TEST REQUIREMENT:
  • Undergraduate - 6.0 IELTS / 79 TOEFL IBT and SAT above 1200.
  • Post Graduate -  6.0 to 6.5 in IELTS/ 90 TOEFL IBT/ GRE 290 to 300 or GMAT 450 to 500. 

For special admissions like DDS, MD Medicine, Pharmacy and Law have set examination to be given

ACCOMODATION:

For the duration of your course and even after, you can choose from 3 accommodation options which are: on-campus dormitories, off-campus apartments and home stays. Apart from paying for the extra amenities like long distance calls, you won’t have to incur a lot of costs. You’ll be well oriented to all the details in the orientation pack that universities provide. The off-campus housing office can assist in helping international students acquaint themselves with the surrounding areas and amenities when guiding them to find a place to live. For students that are aged less than 18 years, home stays offer the comfort of living with an American family that is located near the place of study to help you with your needs.

ESTIMATED COST OF STUDY:

The private universities have a higher tuition fee than the public colleges. However, the public colleges make up the difference by relying on the state funds. Yearly expenditure (living expenses + tuition) could range from $15,000 to $35,000; the average can total up to $20,000. Scholarships and student loans are also offered by both the federal government and private lenders. Scholarships, both merit-based and need-based are available widely.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES: 

International students are not allowed to work during their first year in US. Candidates can however, apply for part-time jobs with special conditions after the initial one year period. Students might get an opportunity to work part-time, on campus for about 20 hours a week. During holidays and college breaks, students can work full-time, if they maintain a good standing. Employment of international students, who have arrived on a non-immigrant visa such as F-1, is strictly regulated.
